5 Weight loss tips to Avoid

It can be hard to sift through myriad of diet/weight-loss advice as well as all the latest healthy eating trends to find something that is ideal, enjoyable and something that works for your life. Here is 5 common pieces of advice that I believe does more harm than good.

Stay away from legumes

Legumes or beans are commonly cut out of many popular diets since they are deemed too high in carbs. The truth is Beans are some of most fibre rich foods as well a brilliant source of clean carbs and protein. They are perfect if you are trying to lose weight on a budget when made into soups, stews and curries.

Refined Carbs and Sugar are Poison

I do agree that these types of food aren't always health enhancing but the approach of complete elimination can backfire. Overconsumption of these foods is where the real danger lies, so regulate it and watch them pounds drop. Enjoy a piece of cake at a party (no, you didn’t “blow it”), and then balance it out by having food that is filled with nutrients and vitamins for the rest of the day.

Refined Sugar

Fight through your Cravings!

If you are struggling with cravings, it is likely because the restrictions you have put on yourself are too strict and your body isn't getting the nutrients it needs, therefore it triggers your cravings. My suggested approach: Create a lasting healthy lifestyle means you "indulge" guilt free.

Simply Just Eat less and Move more

The reason why someone might be struggling to lose weight is not always because they don't have a calorie deficit. It’s important to acknowledge that weight loss takes an individualised nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress-management, which includes strategies to manage obstacles. If your doctor tells you that you need to lose weight and then gives the above advice, push back and ask for specifics on how or for a referral to a professional (like a Nutrition and diet expert) who can help create a personalised plan.

Meal Replacements

If you swap your breakfast or lunch with a shake, you might find it works to help you lose weight in the short-term. However, it can get boring and becomes a barrier during travel and social obligations. If you don’t know how and what to eat when on your own or after you stop drinking the shakes, it becomes difficult to keep the weight off and you start a vicious cycle. That’s where consulting a specialist in weight loss can be helpful for creating a sustainable long-term plan.

Food should be enjoyed, they should be memorable and not tedious forceful eating. Losing weight is so much easier and sustainable when it is not just a momentary stage of your life but rather it is part of the lifestyle that you enjoy living.
